PROGRAM

• Introduction
• Presentation of participants and lecturers; Overview of the program; Building the European Research Area: a scientific career in Europe
• Presentation of posters by participants.

• Image analysis: techniques and application
• Raman and infra-red spectrometry: theory
• Practical session at the Raman spectrometer of the IPGP.

• Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction, and the fabric of polycrystalline rocks and materials
• Micro-imaging: acquisition - (Download teaching material)
• Practical session at the CAMPARIS microanalysis centre (MEB and electron microprobe).

• Transmission Electron Microscopy: theory
• Practical session.

• X-ray micro-fluorescence
• X-ray micro-Absorption
• X-ray micro-diffraction.

Day 6.

• Visit to the SOLEIL synchrotron based in Orsay;
• Visit to the proton probe of the Musée du Louvre.

Day 7.

• Visit to the nano-SIMS of the Musée National d'Histoire Naturelle;
• Visit to the laboratories of the Cameca company, the leading manufacturer of electron and ion microprobes.

Day 8. Techniques for in-situ characterisation of isotope and trace elements:

• Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry;
• Laser-ablation ICP-MS;
• Nano-SIMS.

Day 9. Open Discussion Day:

• Recent techniques, and their applications to petrology and material sciences; case studies presented by the participants.
