Fluid and Melt Inclusions Lab

The Fluid and Melt Inclusions Laboratory includes:

  • Linkam THMSG 600 programmable heating/freezing stage for the study of fluid inclusions
  • Linkam TS 1500 programmable heating stage for the study of melt inclusions
  • Motic BA300 polarazing microscope
  • Zeiss microscope
  • Lumenera Infinity1 CMOS camera

  • SEM_ACME

The fluid and melt inclusions lab.

    Sample Preparation Lab

The sample preparation laboratory is equipped for cutting, thinning and polishing thin and thick sections used in fluid and melt inclusions studies.

    SEM_ACME SEM_ACME

Laboratory equipment for the preparation of thin and thick sections.

    SEM Lab

The SEM Laboratory is equipped with a CamScan MX2500 Scanning Electron Microscope with LaB6 gun. Back-scatter electron (BSE) images and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) maps are both used to identify phases within polycrystalline inclusions.

    SEM_ACME

The CamScan MX2500 scanning electron microscope.

    Piston Cylinder Lab

The piston cylinder laboratory is equipped with a QUICKpress piston cylinder apparatus produced by Depths of the Earth.
    Specifications:

  • Max. pressure: 2.5 GPa
  • Temperature range: up to 2100°C
  • Furnace assembly: 13 mm
  • Sample capacity: max. 5mm outer diameter x 8 mm length

  • Piston_facilities Piston_controller_facilities Welder_facilities

Piston cylinder, piston cylinder controller and arc welder.

The remelting of nanogranitoids is a fundamental step necessary to recover the original chemical composition of the melt. In order to re-homogenize the crystallized inclusions, a piston cylinder apparatus is required because experiments must be done at pressure conditions equal or higher than that of the entrapment in the host. This technique prevents decrepitation and interaction with the host. For more information please contact Dr. Omar Bartoli.
